From Convict to Pardoned to Police Sergeant: The Inspirational Journey of Ameer Williams

A New Haven, Connecticut native, Ameer Williams, grew up poor, on welfare and barely making it, while living in the home with his older sister, Kenya Williams and single mother, Velma Williams.  Their father’s drug addiction, which began when he was three years old, is still fresh in his mind.

Ameer attended East Rock Community & Culture Studies Magnet School, Fair Haven Middle School and Wilbur Cross High School, before graduating from Hillhouse High School.  In 1995 he tried At Southern Connecticut State University but failed.

At the age of 18, while Ameer was still in high school, he commenced to selling Marijuana to make ends meet but soon found himself easily graduating to selling crack cocaine, but things took a turn for the worse a few years later.  He caught two drug cases in 1999 and was convicted and sentenced to 15 years, suspended after five years served with three years probation. During his prison sentence Ameer became focused and utilized his time to take as many programs as the prison offered, to include some college courses.   In 2003, he was released from prison and into a halfway house to finish out the remaining few months.

Ameer didn’t fall victim to his environment after he was released from prison.  Instead, he found a job and began his working career.  In fact, he did the unthinkable.  Ameer received a Pardon on December 12, 2012, after being denied three times during the previous years, and at the time of his pardon, he had the longest criminal record that was pardoned in the state of Connecticut’s history. 

Ameer wasn’t done!  In 2013 he applied to the New Haven Police Department, was hired in 2014 and promoted to sergeant in March 2021.  He has obtained an Undergraduate Degree in Social Sciences, a master’s degree in Global Development and an MBA.  He then went on to obtain his PhD in Organizational Leadership but have since placed it on hold to pursue later. 

Not only does the 45-year-old Ameer work for the New Haven Police Department as a police sergeant, but he also formed a Pardon Company called M.E.G.A Inc., which stands for Making Everyone Great Again. With some people having over twenty felonies, Ameer has assisted over 500 people with the pardon process in the state of Connecticut, assisted with pardons in the state of Virginia and he’s gotten records sealed in the state of New York.  Plus, to top it off, Ameer continues to serve his community by offering a free notary service.

Talking about “The Process of Overcoming” challenging circumstances!  Ameer is juggling, managing and balancing multiple responsibilities all while raising three beautiful children. He assumed full custody of his eldest daughter, Amoni, a day before she turned 11 and nurtured her until she completed high school, got married and moved to Florida. He has influenced them in ways that only a parent can dream of.  He has instilled values of kindness and generosity not only to his children, but he has also impacted the lives of those around him.  He is a pillar role model and leader in his community.  He is a man filled with integrity and compassion and his ability to inspire others and beat the odds of growing up poor, being a victim of his community and serving time in prison, but not ever giving up, is what makes Sgt. Ameer Williams a Purposeful SoulVivor ®.
