I was recently in that same space myself. I didn’t have the heart to just ask someone for a hug and instead, I was starving in silence. Before work each morning and for most of my breaks and lunchbreaks, I would stand outside my job and bust it up with the passerby’s, some of whom I’ve grown to know over the years. I had a tenure that was really tough on me. I was dealing with the loss of my only two best friends who were both killed in a car accident by a drunk driver after dropping me off at home from a night of celebrating one of their promotions at work. We were best friends since kindergarten…, and I had just recently broken it off with a woman I had been dating for 4 years who had me believing for two years that I was the father of our 2yr old daughter. It was her coworker’s baby! Maaaaan, when I say that I felt like I was down in the slumps I mean it! I was the walking dead. I was alive but there was nothing flowing inside of me. I was just breathing! I was grieving the loss of my two best friends, the loss of my woman and the loss of a child that I believed was mine. I wasn’t strong enough to remain in the child’s life.
All I wanted was someone to bear hug me so tight for as long as they could so that I could bury my face on their shoulder and cry. I had already cried streams of rivers from what I was experiencing, but there is nothing like crying while someone is comforting you with a hug. I never knew what that felt like but I knew I needed it.
I was standing outside my job one morning observing everyone rushing to work with some people taking their sweet ole time. The regular passerby’s who I would see daily knew I wasn’t my usual self, as I’m sure that all others could see as well. I wasn’t laughing at the corny jokes, smiling at the women that I consistently shot down, I wasn’t engaging in the sports talk like usually did with the guys and when I was, I was a communicating zombie. The only reason that I continued to show up at work is because it was my means of survival. My job paid my bills. This one particular morning, a group of five regular passerby’s, who all worked for the same company, stopped dead in front of me. “Yo, dude you good? You’ve been looking like you got some deep s**t on your mind.” One stated. The other guy in the group followed, “You look like you need a f**king hug buddy.” Maaaaan, when he said that my eyes started to fill up with tears and the next thing I know, that brother gave me a hug and guess what I did? I cried like a darn newborn baby. I was a man, but in that moment, I felt like a little five-year-old boy. I cried so darn hard and loud, and I didn’t GAF who heard me. LOL & SMH! After about a minute or so, he let go and the next thing I know, the third guy gave me a brotherly hug. Then the fourth guy and finally, the last one gave me a hug. “Man, do you think you should be working under this condition today?” If you need somebody to talk to man, there’s a breakfast spot a few blocks up. I mean, s**t, you got us all out here with our eyes all tearing up and s**t. Yo, honestly bro, you’re not good bro!” They all nodded in agreement. I called my manager from outside my job and requested the day off due to an emergency and all five of those brothers called their company and said they would be late.
I never realized until that day that a simple hug, even from strangers was all that I needed. I lost two best friends, a woman and a child, but I gained five friends who were best friends since college.
You never know what people are going through. Give a stranger a hug. They may desperately need it!
